Whimsical Country Window Seat Makeover

Last year, my partner and I moved into this beautiful rental home with a window seat to die for. However, it required a ton of work to make it into what we wanted (okay, what I wanted.). After throwing some white paint on the previously yellow walls, I turned my attention to the reading nook, which featured a very comfortable mattress in a very unimaginative brown pattern fabric. Being a rental space, having the mattress recovered wasn’t a great option so I got creative. Photos and tips below!

Blankets.

Instead of an expensive reupholstery job on a rental home feature, I hunted HomeSense for the perfect blankets., I have three different white blankets as the base, so they’re easy to remove and wash. For a whimsical, feminine country look with a hint of boho, lots of texture was key. All three blankets have tassels. I also usually leave this fur blanket out for a luxurious touch.

Texture.

The keys for both a boho style look or a white-on-white look are texture and pattern. It’s super important for visual interest and creating depth. I was careful with colour on this window seat, but each white piece is totally different.

Pillows.

I know I’m not the only one with a throw pillow addiction! The key to managing it here was buying a maximum of a few at a time, and living with them for a week or so before deciding what I needed next.

When selecting pillows, always try to vary size and shape if possible. I honestly didn’t do a great job with this, and it’s my goal to add some more round pillows for sure. They can be a bit tougher to find on a budget!

Florals.

Nothing says whimsical, feminine fairy garden like some spring floral pieces. This wreath works well in the window without blocking much light, and there’s a sweet little pink succulent pot in the other window. I add more florals for spring, but tons of greenery year round brings any decor to the next level.

Centrepiece.

Just like a dining table, the window seat can be a bit boring on it’s own. These trays are an awesome prop for photos and great if you’re eating on the window seat. For everyday life, I usually leave a few of my favourite coffee table books and some Style At Home magazines out for myself or guests to browse while lounging!

The window seat was a work in progress for a month or two, as most design projects tend to be. This system is great because it allows things to evolve naturally. My favourite part about having a window seat? The way it seems to suck you in on a lazy Saturday; it always ends up being the spot for the entire family to pile up and just do nothing, soak up some sun in the winter, or have an unplanned hangover nap. If you don’t have one, I can’t recommend it enough to plan one out in your next home or build one in your current space!
